Veronica's Basic Toe for Toe-up Socks

I like making toe-up socks. I like Judy's Magic Cast-on, but it always feels awkward to me, manipulating both the tail and the working yarn. So I invented my own. I believe the M1Rm and M1Lg are Cat Bordhi's (?) lifted increases. This could easily be adapted for any yarn thickness, just stop when you get the right number of stitches on each needle for your pattern. Notes: "as tightly as possible" means tight, but not so tight you break the yarn.

Yarn: Any fingering sock yarn
Needle: 2.25mm circular, or size to your gauge

M1Lm:  (right leaning lifted incr) , knit thru the right leg of the stitch one row below the loop on needle (“mother”)(you may have to use your needle tip to give it  a tug to open it up slightly), then knit next stitch
M1Rg: (left leaning lifted incr) Knit next stitch, then knit thru the left leg of the stitch two rows below loop on needle (“grandmother”)

Toe:
Make a slip knot and place loop around one of the needles as an anchor. This will not count as a stitch.

Hold needles parallel, slip knot on the right hand needle.

In a figure-eight pattern wrap (as tightly as possible) left needle, then right, alternating until you have 12 stitches on one needle (left) and 12 + 1 slip knot on the other (right).

Pull right needle so stitches rest on cable. Knit across (as tightly as possible) left needle.  Push stitches to cable, move stitches into position. Slip the slip knot to right needle. Knit across (as tightly as possible) through the back loop.  (Note: these stitches are sitting twisted, so through the back loop will untwist.)

Knit next round (Round 2) moving circular (not back and forth), dropping original slip stitch. At this point you should have an equal number of stitches on each needle, and two rows of knitting between them, with the ends slightly pulling in to form the tip of the toe.  Total sts: 24

Round 3:  K2, M1Lm, k to 2 sts before end, M1Rg, k2 – turn – rep on 2nd needle.  Total sts: 28
Round 4: K across, rep on 2nd needle

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you have a total of 56 (60, 64) sts as per pattern/size requirement.
The increases should not interupt the smooth flow of the 2 start and end stitches - always increase on the third stitch in.

At this point you can use the tip of a needle to tighten up any loose stitches on the first round, by slowly tightening each leg, moving towards the tail end (turn work over to see which end is the tail end, if necessary.)  This can be done at any point, but is easier when you have the toe “cup” open.
Continue with whichever pattern you plan to use for the rest of your sock!

Orange Foxglove

Orange Foxglove
Finished these - theyre more functional than pretty. Used Cat Bordhi's Foxglove architecture - hiding the increases over the instep.

Update: Feb 7/14:  after 6 years, these socks are finally starting to get holes and now require minor darning!

Two Grapey Socks

Good Grapey!

Two, Two Grapey Socks, aha ha haaaa! Doing a Bordhi reinforced heel tightens up the whole sock, and the lace seemed to make it a little tighter as well. However they are done, and drying now, soon to be sent to their future feet!

One Grapey Purple Sock

One Grapey Purple Sock

one grapey purple sock done. The fit isnt the same as my Trekking sock (same pattern and same needles, but the yarn has different stretchiness). I like them all the same though. I think I should have decreased the number of stitches at the leg, added more repeats, and made the width a little tiny bit wider, and just a few more rows before the toe.

All in all I like em!

My own Japanese Feather Socks

Trekking XXL

So I thought Id write up my pattern notes. Ive adapted Walkers' Japanese Feather pattern, so I think its okay to post it, but the Bordhi heels you;ll have to buy the book yourself!

Japanese Feather Socks with Bordhi Cedar Heels

Using Trekking XXL or other fingering sock yarn

CO 60 sts loosely with 2mm needles, join
[k1, p1, k3, p1] for 10 rows
[k1, p1] for 4 rows
knit 1 row dec 5 sts [55 sts]
change to 2.25mm needle
Begin Japanese pattern from Walkers 2nd, p285 altered to in the round and Bordhi's cedar architecture

All odd rows, 2, 4, 16, and 18 [k10, p1]
Rows 6, 10 and 14 [k1, (yo, k1)x3, ssk x3, p1]
Rows 8 and 12 [k1, (k1, yo)x3, ssk x3, p1]
Rows 20, 24, and 28 [k2tg x3, (k1, yo)x3, p1]
Rows 22, and 26 [k2tg x3, (yo, k1)x3, p1]

Complete one full repeat rows 1-28
Complete rows 1-13 rows
For Rows 14, 17, 21, 26 and 28 add [m1p] before final p1 on each repeat to increase to 80 sts as follows:
Row 14 [k1, (yo, k1)x3, ssk x3, m1p, p1]
Row 17, 21 [k10, m1p, p1]
Row 26 [k2tg x3, (yo, k1)x3, m1p, p1]
Row 28 [k2tg x3, (k1, yo)x3, m1p, p1]

using Cat Bordhi's New Pathways for Sock Knitters book to complete the heel decreases.
G=28 sts to mark off for centered over instep, and centered over sole
H=12 wing sts

As Im not fond of lace inside my socks (it rubs!) Complete 32 rows with p1 [k4, p1] over instep to toe, and st st on bottom of foot
Standard toe decreases to 10 sts, pull thru, tie off and hide tails

Hand Dyed Delicious

Concord Grape Sock Yarn

Hand dyed some sock yarn this weekend. This purply goodness makes me crave some of those dark purple concord grapes.

Japanese Feather Socks

Japanese Feather Socks

Found a sock started so I picked out a pattern and just went with it... I used Walker's (2nd) Japanese Feather pattern, and did a Bordhi heel, expanding between the feather pattern. They are really comfy. Now for the 2nd one....

Half N Half sweater begins

Half N Half sweater begins

What to do with really ugly Fleece Artist sock yarn? How about 6 skeins of the stuff? I still cant believe I bought this. So its gonna be a sweater, even if I have to dye it black after.

Ive crochetted the cuffs and one bottom edge panel. Hideous.

To Dye for Slippers

To Dye for Slippers

Ok these were white and black originally. Then to shrink them I put them in the washer, only I totally didnt notice one pair of jeans was new... then I had dirty white and black slippers.

Answer: Dye them. Eh Voila! They are a little on the bright side, but all in all not bad!

Dont Walk On Me

Ive been experimenting with an old pattern I made up. Its a crochetted sock. Only its just too uncomfortable to walk on crochet, no matter how fine the yarn. So the plan is to make the foot knit and the leg crochet. That should get the anti-crochet nuts up in ... pointy sticks.
